Abstract

The potentially harmful health effects of environment tobacco smoke have received considerable attention in recent years. Unfortunately, education about the health consequences is still limited in Indonesia. The purpose of reseach as to determine the association between smoking by family member and environment with the prevalence of acute stroke among nonsmoker women in Stroke Unit of Sardjito General Hospital - Yogyakarta The study included 62 cases of passive smoker women with acute stroke matched to 62 free controls in sex and group of age to determine odds ratio. Compare with other sources of environment tobacco smoke, exposed by husbands have the most potentially risk to increase the incident of acute stroke among passive smoker women. The adjusted odds ratio for acute stroke among women passive smokers by husbands was 5,814 (95% CI, 2,645-12,776) ; by children was 3,526 (95% CI, 1,284-9,681); by brothers was 1,000 (95% CI, 0,061-16,353 ); by other persons out of house member and co-worker was 1,000 (95% CI, 0,274-3,643). The study showed a strongest positive association between passive smoking and acute stroke in women exposed to environment tobacco smoke by husband compare with the other source of pollutans.
