Cherry tomatoes (Lycopersicum esculentum Mill.) are a highly perishable commodity. Therefore, cherry tomatoes require proper post-harvest handling. During transport, cherry tomatoes are prone to mechanical damage due to empty space in the packaging, which causes friction and collisions between the tomatoes and the packaging material. This study aims to evaluate the effect of packaging fillers on mechanical damage to tomatoes during land transportation and to determine the best packaging filler for cherry tomatoes. This study used plastic fruit boxes with dimensions of 38 cm x 26 cm x 12 cm. In this study, long newsprint shreds and banana leaves were used as fillers, while no filler was used as a control. Transportation simulation was conducted at a frequency of 3.9 Hz, amplitude of 4.2 cm for 90 minutes, equivalent to 108.9 km of transportation. The results showed that the filling material had a significant effect on the level of mechanical damage and firmness. However, the filling material had no significant effect on weight loss, total soluble solids, and colour. Newsprint as a filler material was more effective in reducing mechanical damage to the fruit during transport compared to dried banana leaves or no filler material. The use of newsprint as a filler material in cherry tomato packaging is recommended to maintain quality during road transport on uneven roads over distances greater than 100 km.
